Flood fears as rain returns

The river flooded paths and fields this week following heavy rain in the region over the weekend.

But as the levels began to drop people in the county were today warned more rain was on the way.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said: “There is a slow rain belt coming down which could get stuck in our area.

“I think most of the rain will be over North Wales, Shropshire will have a little bit of shelter but it looks as if it could be fairly continuous over Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Once that is out of the way it looks like it is going to turn colder over the next week.”

The riverside path near the weir in Sydney Avenue, Castlefields, Shrewsbury, disappeared under water following this week’s rain and remains cut off today.

Castlefields and Ditherington councillor Alan Mosley today warned people to be aware of the dangers of the weir in flood.

Environment Agency officials today said the River Severn was being monitored but that no flood defences were being put up along the stretch through Shropshire as yet. A flood watch is also in place on the Severn Vyrnwy Confluence.
