BT axing 10,000 jobs

Thursday 13th November 2008, 11:45AM GMT.

Jobs blowThe UK’s economy suffered another crushing blow today when telecoms giant BT announced it was cutting 10,000 jobs, mainly among agency workers and sub-contractors.

Union leaders expressed shock at the scale of the cutback and warned they would resist any moves to make compulsory redundancies.

The company said it had already cut 4,000 jobs, leaving a further 6,000 to go between now and March, adding that it was not planning any compulsory redundancies.

It is not known where the job cuts will come.

Unfortunate, but the days of jobs for life are gone. A good clear out of of the superflous deadwood amongst our nations councils would be preferable and long overdue.
‘Co-ordinators’ ‘diversity managers’ & ‘equality officers’ – your days are numbered.

Most people with knowledge, experience and customer sevice skills were pushed out of BT during the mass redundancies of the 1990′s and never looked back. Ever since, BT has spiralled downhill, fobbing us off with poor service and hiding behind an almost unreachable Indian call centre. The share price has slumped from around £15 a few years ago to £1.22 today. If there are still any good people working for BT take the money and run. Oh, and turn out the lights when you leave.

Merc are you a diversity manager by any chance? Have you met one? If not, how do you know that your council is full of them and not teachers, social workers, refuse collectors, librarians etc?

Meanwhile, how come Bt have 10000 spare underemployed staff that they haven’t got rid of before? Maybe they are more of a social enterprise than we suspected?
