Handbag taken during silence

A thief stole a woman’s bag during the two-minute silence in Telford when she stopped to pay tribute to fallen heroes. Police have today made an appeal for witnesses to come forward.
The woman was visiting Telford Central Library in Southwater Square where she placed her bag next to the desk.
At 11am while she was observing the silence the man grabbed her bag.
Constable Pete Simmonds, of Telford police, said today the victim did not live in the area and was just visiting the town at the time.
He said: “While standing and observing the two-minute silence she was aware that her handbag was being taken. A male then fled with the handbag towards the Hollinswood estate.”
Constable Simmonds added: “Quite clearly this was blatantly disrespectful and upsetting for the victim, while she was observing the national moment of reflection and remembrance.”
David Thomas, county manager for the Shropshire and Herefordshire Royal British Legion, said: “We are appalled that anybody would have a handbag stolen let alone during the two-minutes silence.
“It is dreadful that somebody remembering other people has been targeted and this should never happen at any stage.”
A 21-year-old man was charged with theft following the incident and is due to appear at Telford Magistrates Court on November 25.
Police have urged witnesses to contact Constable Bob Powell at Malinsgate Police Station on 0300 333 3000.
