Edwards keen to keep ‘Kites’

Michael KightlyMidfielder Dave Edwards is hoping Wolves will resist any attempts to lure top players like Michael Kightly away during the January transfer window.

Kightly scored both goals in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Burnley to make it seven for the season and Edwards believes it is essential Wolves keep hold of him.

He said: “He’s definitely a Premier League player already and hopefully he’ll be there next season with Wolves.

“Hopefully we can keep him at Wolves – it’s going to be tough for the chairman because I’m sure there are going to be clubs after him.

“I’m pretty sure he’ll want to stay here with the way the club’s going at the moment. I’m sure the gaffer and the chairman want to keep him as well so he can play in the Premier League next season with Wolves.”

Former Shrewsbury Town ace Edwards feels it would be counter-productive to start losing star players with Wolves on top of the Championship.

“If we start to lose players in January or at the end of the season that wouldn’t do anyone any good.

“You have to keep your best players and he’s definitely one of them, with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who have been linked with other clubs.

“If we keep them and do well in this league this season, we’ll need those players next season so hopefully we do that because everyone’s aim is to get to the Premier League.

Edwards has been impressed with Kightly’s contribution to Wolves’ success this season.

“Kites is ever so dangerous going forward and he will get goals – that’s what he brings to the team.

“Even if he isn’t playing at his best, you can never fault his work ethic and he got what he deserved on Saturday.

“Hopefully he can get double figures before Christmas with any luck – he has that little knack of finding good areas around the pitch to get into goalscoring positions.

“Once he gets there, he’s very confident and clinical in front of goal as well so, touch wood, he’s going to get into double figures.”
