Big cat problem – your views
Wednesday 12th November 2008, 9:45AM GMT.

Shrewsbury folk are being asked for their views on a new logo after heraldic experts were called in to examine why the town has two coats of arms. But Shropshirestar.com readers have already been giving their opinions.
The new Shrewsbury Town Council – which will come into existence next year – needs a logo and it could use the coat of arms granted to the town before 1974 – when a borough council was formed.
But council bosses have discovered more than one design existed before 1974. Records show that as far back as 1906 the design was made up of three lions’ faces but there is also evidence that it consisted of three loggerheads.
The College of Arms, heraldic experts, have been brought in to investigate the matter.
And Council leader Councillor Peter Nutting said he wanted people to have their say on the debate over leopards and lions.
He said: “I’m trying to make the process as open as possible so as many people can have an in put.
“One was used before 1974 and the one with leopards is historic. Now the new town council will have to decide which arms they use.
“This is just some initial thoughts. I’m quite happy for people to start giving their opinions on what they think should or should not happen but I do not expect a decision to be made until the new council is formed as it’s a decision it should make rather than members of a different council.”
Robert Noel, Lancaster Herald at The College of Arms, who is investigating the case, said he would have more results on Friday.
He said: “I expect our investigations to be ready by the end of the week.I am looking at all the Shrewsbury information registered here since the early days of heraldry.”
In order to use the heraldic arms on a logo, the council will need a Royal Licence.
So far, despite a strong start for leopards, the vote for lions has increased, and at the time of going to press the results showed an even 50/50 split. But what’s your view? Vote now in our online poll below. It’s just a matter of clicking your mouse button.

Perhaps we should have a panther, given that the Star regularly tells us there are a number of these on the loose in the area?

It does not matter as long as it does not cost taxpayers money.

another pathetic waste of money stick to the loggerheads, they are lovely pussies, why change the badge. a great pity town’s football club do not have a badge with 3 loggerhead pussies on it and the latin motto floreat salopia, let shrewsbury flourish. so come on council stick with what you have or waste 500k on another lenny the lion badge. can you be trusted to leave things alone. advance loggerheads you lovely creatures

Does anybody care which it is???

the council will spend more time and money debating this, than they will on putting a toxic incinerator in public areas

Why change what doesn’t need to be fixed, spend the money on wiser things. Don’t let it be another silly cost to the taxpayer!
(I do think they are Lions though)

atleast he is open with the debate unlike when shropshire county council held that mock competiion for the schools then broke some poor childs heart when the winner of the competition was overlooked and they kept their old logo

I think that it should be the lions, or something completely different, because people are going to get confused between Shropshire county council and Shrewsbury Town Council, shropshire council has the panthers so shrewsbury should have something different.

“Shrewsbury folk are being asked for their views on a new logo”
Are we?
When and how exactly?!
And as several people have pointed out, how much is this costing us?!

The Lions look as though they are being sick.
Maybe the crest should feature parrots.
Most footballers feel sick as a parrot at some point in their career usually after they have set their stall out.

Loggerheads is thought to be a corruption of luber’s head which is old english for Loepard head.

I think it sahould be a nice picture of tiddles a pampered housecat which gets fed the best treats, combed, etc while its neighbour Telford a stray allay cat is badly treated and exposed to all sorts of pollution just so tiddles can live in fresh air and have lovely surroundings

Oh How boring.
Does anybody really care?
Look guys …Bring the whole thing to the chamber of commerce breakfast business meeting (every other Weds at Grazia) Present the thing in a 10minute presentation – and let the 40 odd local business owners, who DO know about logos and branding – decide
OK? see you there – now THERE’S a challenge!
And there’s two memebers of the chamber already writing on this thread!
(like I said before in another thread on the subject of logo designs for the council)

Please, Pleae,Please do NOT let the person/company that designed the disasterous Shrewsbury Town Football Club clip art lion Badge anywhere near the project.

absolutely right edward, the football badge is a disgrace to the club, town and county. whoever designed it needs to take up basket weaving or anything else

I think it should be three loggerheads with floreat salopia.Because they are on the original chain of shrewsbury 1863 and on all the shrewsbury silver

Lets have the Lions the Leopards look cheap and nasty, would the Lion Hotel have to change its name. Why should the old crest have to go…leave things alone please.Shrewsbury is too keen on changing things and not for the best.

I agree I think Shresbury should use the old Welsh name it was known by Amwythig for years and rightly Shrewsbury should be renamed Amwythig

The first association of lions with Shrewsbury I saw was at the entrance to one of the shopping centres in Shrewsbury town centre – They didn’t and still don’t look right to my eye. The Loggerheads in the arms as granted to the Borough are cleaner and crisper. In modern terms they would probably, be clearer in print. They would use less ink to harm the environment with its heavy metal content when recycled. The cost of using even three colours rather than two for the quantities involved would be expensive in the long term.
The lower and older of the two crests shown in the article marked as posted on 12th November incorporates a ‘W’ of ermine which I understood to be the arms of the County of Shropshire and not Shrewsbury.
Is change for the sake of it really what people wish? Why not leave the arms as they were before media mashers started to play around with them in the latter part of the last century? The ‘Shrow’ of middle English Shrowesbury only became ‘Shrew’ after a ancient copying error.
The town’s name has more recently been further mutilated by the use of the image of our smallest land mammal the shrew which has no true relevance being merely evidence of a lack of understanding.

And while we are at it, make Amwythig capital of Wales and all those poor people from Aberystwyth and all points north would not have to travel abroad into England to get to their own capital!
