Jackson: ‘Defeat must drive us on’

Tuesday 11th November 2008, 1:07PM GMT.

Mike JacksonExperienced defender Mike Jackson today urged Shrewsbury Town to use their bitter FA Cup disappointment as a motivational tool for the remainder of the season.

In keeping with manager Paul Simpson, Jackson described Saturday’s first round upset at Blue Square North outfit Blyth Spartans as the lowest point of his 17-year playing career.

But the former Crewe, Preston and Blackpool stopper insisted Town must attempt to bury the memories of that setback as they pursue glory in both the League and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

“We are all a bit embarrassed,” said Jackson. “We had a meeting yesterday – you can’t just say forget it because it wasn’t acceptable.

“I know the gaffer said it was the worst moments in his career and that is certainly the case for me – and that includes losing play-offs and stuff like that.

“You get reminded about it all the while and it’s very hard to get it out of your head. But if something like this doesn’t drive you on then nothing will.

“We have got some good games and big games coming up before Christmas starting at Chesterfield on Friday.

“We are only two points off the top of the League and in a good situation in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, so it’s not all doom and gloom.

“We don’t think as a team we have played consistently well over a good run all season and that’s up to us to sort out as players.”

Meanwhile, Town’s southern area semi-final tie against either Brighton or Swindon in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy has been selected for coverage by Sky.

Shrewsbury will host one of the League One sides – the identity of which will be decided when they meet tomorrow – on Tuesday, December 16.

“We knew there was a chance of live coverage when you get to this stage of the competition and we are really pleased because there are some big ties (in the next round),” said general manager Jon Harris.

“We have had Setanta cover an England under 19 game at the Prostar Stadium and it’s a great honour to have Sky coming here for live coverage.”

Get up in gear lads, and drop that Jeckyll/Hyde effect when you away from home.

We beat good teams at home such like; Bradford, Gillingham ect., but loose to minors such as; Blyth, Morecambe and Accrington – theres no logic in that.

If we really want promotion, we have no time to waste – get on with it……
