Great late deals to be had
Tuesday 11th November 2008, 8:06AM GMT.
Look out for some great deals on short and long haul destination breaks.
The British Airways sale until tomorrow, November 11, which has discounts up to 40 per cent on more than 70 destinations, highlights the excellent value to be found on both short and long-haul destinations.
BA offers include return flights to Mauritius from £603, saving up to £112, with two-star hotel rooms from £25 per person; Venice from £42 single, with three-star hotel rooms from £26; and Bangkok from £609, saving £185.
A return to Washington starts at £299, to San Francisco from £339. Breaks ex-Gatwick to Barcelona, Naples and Madrid start at £42 single.
However, it could be the weaker currencies of Africa which makes countries more attractive as the global crunch unravels, says the head of one long-haul operator.
Ash Sofat, managing director of North London-based Somak Holidays, a specialist in Africa and India, reckons a big growth area for 2008-09 will be Zanzibar. He also claims a 12.3 per cent year-on-year surge in bookings to Tanzania and a six per cent jump in demand for South Africa.
Sofat says many hotels in East Africa, notably Kenya, do contracts in US dollars – and Somak was among operators who cannily stored dollars when they were around two to the pound early in 2008.
