Wolves 2 Burnley 0

Monday 10th November 2008, 7:55AM GMT.

Wolverhampton WanderersWolves made it four successive wins with a comprehensive 2-0 win over high-flying Burnley at Molineux. Two goals from winger Michael Kightly made it seven of the season for the Molineux golden boy, extending Wolves’ lead at the top of the Championship to six points.

Kightly broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, when he tapped home at the second attempt after hitting the post, following a defence splitting link up with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in a flowing move started by Stephen Ward in his own half.

Wolves made it 2-0 in the 76 minute with a simple close range finish from Kightly, again from Ebanks-Blake’s cross, after the winger had won a header on the half way line following a wayward Dave Jones clearance.

Wolves were always on top and perhaps deserved more goals to reflect their overall superiority, but found them hard to come by against a tough tackling Burnley side, who had six bookings before defender Clarke Carlisle was sent off for a second yellow card in the 79th minute.

Despite controlling huge periods of the game, the only other serious save Wolves forced was Richard Stearman’s header tipped over by Brian Jensen.

They went close through captain Karl Henry, who sliced over on his 100th appearance for the club.

Ebanks-Blake also threatened with an overhead kick in the first half as did Chris Iwelumo, who glanced a header straight at Jensen before half-time.
