Teenager fined over litter

Monday 10th November 2008, 6:00PM GMT.

Ketley BankA Telford teenager has been ordered to pay £265 after he was caught dropping a crisp packet on the floor.

Thomas Pearce, of Third Avenue, Ketley Bank, threw the packet outside a shop in Ketley Bank on June 20.

The 19-year-old was handed a £50 fixed penalty notice by a police community support officer.

However, after failing to pay the fine on three occasions, Pearce appeared at Telford Magistrates Court on Friday, where he admitted the littering offence under the Environmental Protection Act.

Pearce was fined £100 and ordered to pay £150 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Pearce was unable to be contacted by the Shropshire Star.

At 19 he should know better than to drop litter, shame on him and shame on whoever was supposed to teach him right from wrong!

Good. Don’t litter and you won’t have to worry about getting fined, simple.

This is great news. At last the selfish idiots that drop litter may get the message! Just a shame that there’s not more of this. We should not be paying people to pick up litter, just spend the money on enforcement and issuing fines and the problem will eventually be sorted.

WHY NO CUSTODIAL SENTENCE FOR THIS BELLIGERANT, MINDLESS FOOL OF A LAW-BREAKER?

WON’T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

    And such like…

In all fairness, blatantly dropping an empty crisp packet, when there are readily available litter bins around, does smack of olympic-sized laziness.

Cue Peach branding me an extremist for mentioning the olympics when – according to saucewatch no doubt – the olympics were founded by a person whose fourth cousin, twice removed, had a friend who sold some hay to the brother of Torqemada.

Ergo, I support the burning of witches.

    *sigh*

Shame the police don’t use these fixed penalty notices for drunk and disorderly to try and address the crime caused by drinking. Methinks “the patth of least resistance”

I think this is a great example to be setting, well done to the council for it’s persistence. I am sure there will be some who complain about this but this person was breaking the law and repeatedly tried to skip the fine. He completely deserves this.

This wasn’t issued by the Police, it was a community support officer so it’s got nothing to do with path of least resistance. Request the figures for drunk and disorderly tickets under the freedom of information act and you’ll see they give out loads of tickets for those type of offences. Quit whining, Rant over, thankyou !
