Motorists were forced to clamber on to the roofs of their cars to await rescue as flash-flooding wreaked havoc across Shropshire.

Torrential rain fell in just a few hours yesterday afternoon, leaving drivers stranded as flood waters rose rapidly. Some were forced to climb on top of their cars, while others remained inside the vehicles as rising water reached their windows.

Last night a motorist had to call 999 when their vehicle became trapped in flood water at Neen Savage, in Cleobury Mortimer. One person remained in the vehicle as crews from Cleobury Mortimer towed the car out of the water.

Last night a motorist had to call 999 when their vehicle became trapped in flood water at Neen Savage, in Cleobury Mortimer. One person remained in the vehicle as crews from Cleobury Mortimer towed the car out of the water.

In Craven Arms there was a lot of surface water on the side of the roads and further south the River Onny burst its banks.

People in Lower Corve Street, Ludlow, anxiously watched the waters rise around Burway Bridge today.

And many motorists driving along the A49 on the Shropshire/Herefordshire border near Berrington Hall got caught up in the flooding with some abandoning their vehicles.

Residents in Tenbury Wells were bracing themselves for more flooding today as the River Teme rose. 

Sandra Green, of the Little Sweet Shop in the town, said: “The river is very high. The town is open, there is no problem at the moment. So far so good. We are just keeping our fingers crossed.”   

The road into Highley, near Bridgnorth, suffered flooding last night but was accessible this morning. However council officials said a number of roads across the south of the county had been closed due to floods, including Neen Savage, Bynd Lane at Highley and Honeysuckle Lane in Stottesdon. 

The A4113 was closed between Walford and Leintwardine causing a lengthy diversion through Wigmore or Bucknell.

Shropshire County Council said the work had been postponed because there was a danger a dam would be created by knocking the bridge into the brook below.

People who braved the weather to watch the firework display at Weston Park, near Shifnal, also became victims of the downpours when their vehicles had to be pulled out of the car park field by tractor.
