Bridge work on hold

Monday 10th November 2008, 2:00PM GMT.

Sheinton BridgeWork to demolish part of an historic Shropshire bridge which collapsed into a brook was delayed again today after high rainfall meant it could not be carried out.

Engineers were due to move in this morning to pull down what remains of Sheinton Bridge after it crashed into Hughley Brook on October 22.

But Shropshire County Council bosses say work has now been put back.

Laura Owen, spokeswoman for the authority, said: “It hasn’t started today because of the amount of rainfall and the high river levels.

“If we did it today, because we’ve got to demolish it into the river, it could create a dam which would not be very sensible.

“We will look at it again tomorrow and keep an eye on it and see when we can start demolition work.”
