Bucks will relish underdog role

Tuesday 4th November 2008, 12:20PM GMT.

Rob SmithBoss Rob Smith has urged AFC Telford United to enjoy the rewards for their cup exploits, and insisted: “There’s no pressure on us now.”

The Bucks were tonight entertaining Blue Square Premier high-fliers Cambridge United in a Setanta Shield third round tie at the New Bucks Head.

And that is followed by the main event on Saturday – a meeting with League One side Southend United in the FA Cup first round proper.

Tonight’s clash is lower down the pecking order in terms of importance, but Smith is eager to see his side put up a good show and build on their 12-game unbeaten run.

He will make changes to his side, with defender Indy Khela pencilled in for a start and midfielder Jon Adams due to make his return from injury, so long as he passes a pre-match fitness test.

“The lads have had a tough week and they’ve done well,” Smith declared, having seen them win 3-0 at Northwich in the FA Cup and then come from behind to beat Hucknall 3-1 in the Blue Square North.

“Now they can enjoy the rewards – there’s no pressure on us and we can go and enjoy it tonight.

“Both managers will be going for it I’m sure – I know I will – but neither of us will lose any sleep if we are knocked out.

“Neither of us will want it to go to extra-time but we will both want to get through to the next round.

“There’s one thing for certain – I will have a strong team out. Places are up for grabs for Saturday and no-one will want to miss out on that.

“The big incentive tonight is to try and keep this run going. If we can get to 13 unbeaten it will be great.”

Meanwhile, Smith declared himself happy with Telford’s FA Trophy draw, having been paired away to Gainsborough Trinity in the third qualifying round on Saturday, November 22.

The Bucks have already beaten Gainsborough twice at home this season, 2-1 in the league and 3-2 in the Setanta Shield after extra-time.

“It gives us a chance and that’s the main thing,” said smith. “It’s a tough place to go and we know we will be in for a tough game, but it’s winnable.”
