Crash debris hits couple

Monday 3rd November 2008, 4:00PM GMT.

The scene of the damage in DawleyA terrified elderly couple were showered with glass and bricks after a sports car smashed into a wall just feet from their home.

Gladys and Ray Cook were in the front room of their home in Heath Hill, Dawley, when they heard the “almighty” bang as the blue BMW Z3 crashed into the wall yesterday. Today their daughter, Linda Cook, said it was lucky the pair were not seriously hurt.

Gladys, 74, was hit on the leg by a brick, while 78-year-old Ray ended up with two in his lap.

The couple, who were still shaken by their ordeal today, called for Telford & Wrekin Council to do something about the speed of traffic on the road as well as flooding problems, which caused hazards and black ice.

Miss Cook, of Aqueduct, said: “Dad was in the chair and mum was beside him. Bricks landed in dad’s lap and glass was everywhere; they were showered with glass. Mum just screamed, she was completely terrified.”

Miss Cook said a vehicle had collided with the wall before, but there had been several incidents when cars ended up on the other side of the road. She said larger speed indicator signs were needed on the 40mph road.

Telford & Wrekin Council was unavailable for comment.
