Villagers back shop fight
Thursday 30th October 2008, 1:30PM GMT.
People living in a north Shropshire village have launched a bid to open their own community shop – after the previous one closed its doors. A group of villagers from Cheswardine have united in the task.
They found people desperately wanted a village store.
They want to launch a non-profit making shop in the village and are holding a meeting on November 4 at 7pm in the village hall to discuss plans.
Amanda Parish, spokeswoman for the group, said there were a number of ways people could help out, including setting up a steering group, volunteering in the shop, becoming a shareholder and helping to find premises and kitting them out.
She said people in the village were “desperate” for a community shop but there was a lot of hard work involved.
“We have surveyed the whole village and asked people whether they want a shop,” she said.
“We have had about 50 per cent replies and they all want a shop.
“Lots of people are willing to help out and lots of us are willing to be shareholders. It’s not just about having a shop, it’s about having something for the community.
“Without the shop, there is nothing. The shop is the centre, where you would find everything out.”
Mrs Parish said there were eight people involved in the group but they were keen for other to get involved.
