Call for boycott of circus
Thursday 30th October 2008, 6:59AM GMT.
Paul Thomas, campaigns assistant for CAPS, said: “Peter Jolly’s Circus is one of just six still to use animals, amid increasing calls for such performances to be banned. The public are being asked to boycott it. It has zebras, camels, horses and llamas and other animals.
“With so many excellent animal-free circuses now touring, the days of transporting animals from town to town is becoming a thing of the past. Opinion polls consistently reveal that the public oppose the confinement, transportation and training methods used by animal circuses.
“It’s time to end the outdated practice of forcing animals to perform for our amusement, particularly when there are lots of high quality circuses that rely entirely on human skills. In the 21st century there can be no excuse for continuing to allow the treatment of animals in this way.”
Mr Jolly said: “CAPS send this out everywhere we go. If people look on the DEFRA website they will see that that says one thing and they say the other. What these people say isn’t what is the truth.
“Of course we use animals, it’s a circus, if there were no animals it would just be a variety show.
“Our bookings are very good.
“We travel all over the country but we are based in Craven Arms.
“We’re a traditional family circus, with everything you’d expect to see in a circus.”
Peter Jolly’s Circus will be in Bridgnorth from today to Sunday, with performances daily.

Not sure how I feel abouts CAPS!!
Animals have a right to be free and not to live in captivity however many animals are hunted for fur etc when free.

I’m not too sure about this one either (oh God, I’m agreeing with Y Mab!!!).
I think the use of “exotic” animals is totally out of order, even zoos have difficulty providing a decent environment for bears, elephants etc.
When it comes to domestic animals such as horses and dogs, which have become accustomed to human company over thousands of years I think it’s rather different. Obviously there needs to be strict enforcement of welfare standards, but I would ask which has the happier and healthier life – a dog doing tricks in a circus or some poor creature left chained up in a back garden?
Interestingly Sweden (which has the world’s strictest animal welfare legislation) permits the use of domestic animals in circuses – at least one British circus relocated there as a result.

I recall a circus coming to the quarry in Shrewsbury, I happened to walk apst and saw a horse that was chained to the ground.. it was walking round in circles and the grass was worn it didnt look happy to me.. I think they should be stopped. I take on board Rob’s comment but I still feel that they are wrong

FLUFFY bunny brigade out again, it is not a traditional circus, the usa and most of europe have them and there very good infact .Here in the uk some people would have there animals sleeping on the furniture and the human on the floor, i suggest they campaign about something important like more money for cancer drugs etc etc etc

Fair comment Gareth, I agree that we need far higher standards of animal welfare generally.
As a dog owner I would quite happily pay a reasonable amount for a dog licence, as long as the money raised was spent on enforcing decent treatment of the dogs.

i think protesters would be better served getting the eu to ban bull fighting, i used to look forward to bertram mills, billy smarts and chipperfields cicus’s visting the town. i always paid extra to visit the menageries and see the animals which seemed well cared for. is there any difference between circus and indoor show jumping i suggest not. it seem light years ago since bertram mills would parade their elephants through shrewsbury, so if you are seriously concerned about animal welfare, sort the spanish out.

Its a shame that yet again caps have got their story wrong, Circus with animals in the UK and europe are growing, this year shows with animals have done extremely good business and I have yet to see a show where the animals are not in prestine condition, look around the streets and in fields where animals dogs cats horses are just walking around with nothing to do and no shelter, do you call that looking after animals ? I think not.

so why is it that circuses that have animals play to full houses while those with all human acts struggle to make a living???? clearly the general public want to see animals and so long as they are well cared for…. most of them are given better conditions that humans

battery hens, calves in crates, and other forms of cruelty are way ahead in my league above innocent travelling circus’s

A circus without animals is like like strawberry with out cream if only these caps people would concentrate on seeing how well cared for and happy in there safe enviroment, instead of spreading malicious lies

When I was a lad caps were something we put in our toy guns! now we have organizations for everything! to be honest if the Circus are looking after the animals then fair enough and at least lots of people get to see these amazing animals without jetting off to Africa and increasing CO2 emissions.

I can agree with you for once devon salopian, bull fighting is an afront to every civilised person and value whether they be Spanish or whatever. This barbaric antic should be stopped immediately and the EU would go up in my estimation (from the pits were it is at present) if it did so.

OMG the Bunny Huggers have banned fox-hunting and now turning their attention to harmless family entertainment.
I went “back-stage” at the Market Drayton circus this summer and have no issues about the animal welfare. They were the highest standards. So I suggest that people go to the circus and form their own opinions based upon their own experiences.

Stuart and Devon: I’ve never actually seen bull foghting and the behind the scenes issues. But I would like to so that i could form a more informed experience.
However to be fair to the siesta loving Spanish, they do allow the tables to be turned with the Pamplona Bull Run.

stuart, sorry if we only briefly agree, but on this i agree with you 100%. i have been in a bull ring but have never seen a bull fight except snippets on tv that sickened me, and lucy even the pamplona bull run is cruel. perhaps we can all lobby our mep’s and get the star to lead a campaign, now there would be regional press campaigning at its best, ole

just because animal cruelty is obvious in bullfighting, battery farming etc it doesnt mean these groups should ignore the cruelty of animals in circuses. i agree with those who want to end this outdated practice. i support the circuses without animals and take kids to them every year. Groups like caps have my full support
