‘Wedding day’ for little ones

Wednesday 29th October 2008, 10:00AM GMT.

The bride and bridesmaids arriveYoungsters at a school near Oswestry learned all about the headaches of organising a wedding when they arranged their own.

Members of the infant class at Llangedwyn School organised the big day as part of a school project into what role churches play in society.

The youngsters decided between themselves which roles they should take for the wedding, including the bride and groom, which went to five-year-old Molly-Jo Chadd and Kieran Johnston, six – and Molly-Jo even had transport to the ceremony at Llangedwyn Church in the form of a chauffeur and tricycle.

The day was topped off by the exchange of rings before the youngsters, and the happily married “couple”, headed back to school for a wedding reception and to cut the cake.

Infant class teacher Lisa Griffiths said the day was a great success and allowed the youngsters have some fun as well as understand more about churches.

She said: “The children have been learning about what happens in churches as part of our RE/PSE curriculum.

“They decided to hold a wedding and as a class discussed who came to weddings and what we would need.

“The children organised transport for the bride, made their own hats and jewellery and decided who would have which role on the day.

“After the wedding we went back to school for the party where the happy couple cut their wedding cake and then had a dance.

“This was a lovely experience for the children where learning through play was certainly memorable.”
