Police campaign on bad behaviour

Saturday 25th October 2008, 9:00AM BST.

PolicePolice in Shrewsbury have launched a crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Sundorne with the aim of improving the quality of life for local people.

The policing team for the area is trying to tackle the problem through enforcement and education initiatives. A new youth club night will be held on Friday nights – when most anti-social behaviour occurs.

Constable Andy Gardner today said a minority of people could upset the lives of a far greater number through their inconsiderate behaviour.

He said police were currently involved in several initiatives aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour.

“The local policing team has been carrying out extra patrols around the Moston Road area following a recent spike in anti-social behaviour,” he said.

“We are trying to identify the offenders and seeking to deter further incidents.

“A Severnside Housing representative came out on patrol with us to identify and deal with those people who may be in breach of their tenancy by acting in an anti-social manner.

“There are several joint Severnside and police visits to offenders planned.

“They will be informed their tenancy is at risk and about the consequences of further offending behaviour.”

Constable Gardner said the team had held talks with the youth service to hold an extra night for the youth club.

He said: “The extra night will be held on Fridays which is the time when most anti-social behaviour occurs. This is a 50 per cent increase in evening youth provision in the area.

“We will continue to monitor the anti-social behaviour to assess the effectiveness of these new measures.”

The team has also been working with Sundorne Secondary School, attending three times a week.

Constable Gardner said: “This scheme is in its infancy and we are currently making efforts to break the ice with the students.

“We hope to become accepted by the pupils in school and to run drop-in sessions offering advice while taking on board their issues and concerns.

“We are also working with Sundorne Infants School, running a junior neighbourhood watch scheme with the pupils.”
