Nostalgia round-up
Friday 24th October 2008, 8:00AM BST.
We’ve been carrying some old views of Donnington over the past few days, and here’s another one, showing the memorial garden. It was published by F Spiers, a Donnington newsagent – no doubt this postcard would have been sold in the shop. The date would seem to be immediately post war. The war memorial is still there today, although its setting has altered somewhat – for example, the benches are further back these days. This photo was e-mailed to us by Paul Thompson, church archivist of St Matthew’s Church, Donnington.

The Donnington Parade photo:.
the shop cut off by the photo was H.B Galliers the butchers & next door to that was Leedhams hardware shop & where the fish & chip shop is now used to be a launderette.
H.B Gallier had the best pork pies in Shropshire as far as I’m concerned.
Dad got a large pie every week & i can still remember the taste now.

I just love your ‘Nostalgia’ section, being in exile. When I was young I used to enjoy a drink at The George and The Raven Hotels in the middle of Shrewsbury. Has anyone got pictures? I am trawling through my photos.

Well J.K, Shropshire Lads are not what they used to be. A.E,Housman would turn in his grave. Even some I know born many years ago have lost the title.
