Lloyd eyes title shot

Boxer Mark LloydShropshire boxer Mark Lloyd could have a British title shot to accompany the top prize of £25,000 – if he can become Prizefighter champion tonight.

Trainer Errol Johnson believes that is the double bonanza on offer to the Shifnal plumber as he gears up for the biggest night of his boxing career at the famous York Hall venue in Bethnal Green.

Lloyd is one of eight welterweights doing battle on a manic night of action, which will feature four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and a final – all fought over three, three minute rounds.

And Johnson knows victory in the event, which will be shown live on Sky Sports from 8pm, will open up numerous doors for his 33-year-old charge.

“It’s a big night and we are all really looking forward to it,” said Johnson.

“There is big money on offer and if Mark wins the whole thing, it puts him in line for a crack at the British title. He’s definitely up for it.”

Lloyd meets Yorkshire’s Steve Conway in the second quarter-final, and renowned promoter Barry Hearn believes the victor could enjoy an extended run in the competition.

“These are two of the outsiders to lift the trophy, but both will think they’ve got a great chance of getting to the semi-final,” said Hearn.

“They will both think of this as a brilliant opportunity for their career and will now be confident of causing a real surprise by getting to the final, or even winning it.”

Lloyd, who will be backed by more than 60 fans making the trip from Shropshire, tipped the scales at 10st 8lbs 10oz yesterday afternoon.

But there has been drama already with London’s George Hillyard forced to withdraw after failing to make the weight.

He will be replaced by Scotland’s Andrew Ferrans, a potential semi-final opponent for Lloyd.
