Concerns have been raised about how the Highways Agency is dealing with issues on the notoriously dangerous A49. Town councillors in Church Stretton have raised a number of problems with the agency.

But they say they are struggling to make headway. 

They want the 47 signs along a 100-metre stretch of the road simplifying and replacing with brown “places of interest” information signs.

And they are also calling for a 30mph limit extending past the new housing development on Watling Street North.

Councillors discussed their concerns at their full meeting earlier this week. 

Chairman Councillor Bob Welch said he felt he had just been making progress with the Highways Agency’s area manager when he moved on and was replaced.

Councillor Welch said: “I will be pressing the new unitary authority to get some sort of accountability from the agency. 

“I have re-submitted to the Highways Agency all the paperwork produced on the areas we are concerned about.

“The new manager is seeking new statistics on the speed limit at Watling Street North but we have heard noting more about it. I am very keen we work together with the agency.”

Councillor Tom Beaumont suggested the council ask the new manager to attend a council meeting.

Nobody from the Highways Agency was available for comment.
