Protests over bid for flats

Thursday 23rd October 2008, 11:30AM BST.

Campaigners today used people power to show their opposition to planned flats on the site of a former magistrates’ court in Shifnal.

They demonstrated at the 165-year-old building as members of Bridgnorth District Council’s planning committee members walked around the site in Shrewsbury Road.

The protesters held up placards saying: “No more flats for Shifnal”, “Retired but not dead” and “No to demolition, save my history”.

Campaigner Dawn Bithell said: “It was bought by Shifnal Town Council for the people of Shifnal and they want to turn it into ugly horrible flats, what they call affordable housing.”

Plans have been submitted to knock down the building and replace it with one and two-bedroom flats.

Planning officers are recommending members of Bridgnorth planners oppose the scheme when they meet on Monday.

I would have thought that with all the crime in Shifnal the court could be re-opened.

I fully agree with the protesters but because of important work i couldn’t be there for the protest.
The court house should be refurbished and used by a community as something like a youth center rather then more flats that we don’t need and can’t hold or even sell.
