Town gunning for top spot
Tuesday 21st October 2008, 11:30AM BST.
High-flying Shrewsbury go gunning for League Two’s top spot tonight – with manager Paul Simpson still demanding improved consistency.
Town will move into pole position if they chalk up a second away League victory of the season at Accrington Stanley and Wycombe and Bury fail to defeat Barnet and Rotherham respectively.
That is an enticing prospect for buoyant Shrewsbury supporters and Simpson, who is anxious for his side to produce a lengthy unbeaten run to put clear daylight between themselves and the main pack.
And the Town boss is confident there is still more to come from his side.
“What we have got to do is go on a good run now, said Simpson. “Not one, two and three games – we need an eight, nine, 10 game unbeaten run to really secure a place up there.
“We are capable of it – it is a case of putting it together.
“There is still only a small part of the season gone and we had a lot of changes to the squad over the summer.
“What we want is a high level of consistency and I think we will get better and there is more to come from players.
“We will keep working on getting better and pointing out the mistakes, and the great thing about this group of players is that they are prepared to hold their hands up when something could have been done better.”
Tonight’s trip takes Town to one of the less glamourous locations on the League Two rota – but Simpson will demand his side are professional.
“The pitch will still be green and still have goals at each end and we have to do it properly,” he said.
“Accrington are in the League on merit and they are there because they deserve to be.
“They have come off a good win at Luton on Saturday and it’s a game we are really looking forward to.”
Simpson will select from the same squad which defeated Bournemouth 4-1 on Saturday, with midfielder Paul Murray still considered around a week away from full fitness.
Town will come up against two familiar faces tonight with former defender Colin Murdock and Jimmy Ryan both expected to start for Accrington.

These are the type of games we need to win away from home .Draws are no good if we are to keep up with the leaders or be the league leaders.
