Snapshot of a day in county
Tuesday 21st October 2008, 11:00AM BST.
Two friends in Shrewsbury
It was designed as an unusual experiment with disposable cameras left on park benches across Shropshire. Random people were invited to pick them up and capture a snapshot of a day in the life of the county.
And these are the results with people taking pictures of friends, family members, pets and street scenes. Dozens of people from across Shropshire got involved in the county-wide photo experiment on Saturday.
See below for more pictures
It was organised by members of the Shropshire Community of the Flickr photosharing website.
Cameras were left on benches in Bridgnorth, Ellesmere, Ludlow, Much Wenlock, Newport, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Telford complete with a note inviting people to take a picture of whatever they felt like.
The cameras were collected on Saturday evening by members who developed the films to find out what people had taken pictures of.
None of the cameras were stolen and organiser Mike Ashton said the experiment had gone really well.
“We’re really pleased with how it went and we’ve got some really interesting pictures,” he said.
“We’re still waiting for some of the pictures to be developed and hopefully they will all be done in the next couple of days.
“We’ve got pictures back from Much Wenlock, Newport and Shrewsbury and the ones from Much Wenlock are the best so far.
“We left two cameras in Shrewsbury, one outside the library and the other at the top of Pride Hill, near the shopping centre. We got a nice portrait of a mother and child and a group of about six youngsters from the one by the shopping centre.”
Jake Perks, who left a camera outside Just William Cobblers in Newport High Street, said: “We got some really nice photos of people and of the High Street.”

@ Y Mab Darogan:
Nice idea – and it was discussed. However, we wanted to capture a day in the life of ordinary Shropshire, as opposed to tourist Shropshire, plus the likelihood of there being enough passing “traffic” was slimmer in those spots.
@ Kelly Holmes
Thanks for the info! Did you take the picture? I’ll make sure both you and Dominic are credited on the photo on Flickr :-)

Great stuff… I really liked the idea. I tried to get a similar event going a few months ago. I wanted to do Much Wenlock and a Day in the life of. I mentioned it in a few photography forums and spoke to the Bridgnorth Journal and one of the counsellors at Much Wenlock but I could get enough photographers interested.
I am very pleased it worked out for you.
