Shoppers urged to stay local
Tuesday 21st October 2008, 11:20AM BST.
John Murray, a town and district councillor for Wem and also owner of the Treacle Mine, said he had noticed a downturn in trade, and other shops were even worse off.
“Some shops are not doing so well at the moment, trade is down,” he said.
“The people in Wem are wonderful in supporting the local shops but in the run up to Christmas we need people to spend locally.
“Thank you to the people of Wem and rural areas for coming in and supporting the town, but please spend that little bit extra in Wem in the run up to Christmas to help the local shops and keep them open in the face of the current economic situation.”
Dave Grainger, chairman of the Wem Chamber of Commerce, said everyone was struggling in the current financial situation, and agreed people should be encouraged to support the local economy.
“We are 100 per cent behind that. We want people to shop in Wem. It’s a good time to shop locally,” he said.
“Everyone across the country is struggling. It’s very difficult out there, but we shall carry on battling like everyone else.”
