McCarthy’s fury over Keogh boos

Monday 20th October 2008, 11:29AM BST.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthyFurious Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has hit out at the ‘disgrace’ of the boo boys making Andy Keogh’s life a misery by demanding they stay away from Molineux.

Sections of fans reacted to a stray pass from Keogh by booing him before cheering his substitution during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Coventry, which sent Wolves back to the top of the Championship.

McCarthy can’t believe the way some supporters reacted to the way Keogh was trying to adapt to playing left midfield, and has demanded those fans get off the Irishman’s back.

“Don’t turn up for me if you’re going to boo Keogh because I think it’s a disgrace,” said McCarthy. “I’m going to make a case for Andy because it drives me mad. I’d say to anybody who has booed him, ‘get off his back’.

“We’ve lost Matt Jarvis, we lost ‘Kights’ for a while and Andy went in there and did a job for the team.

“I’ve talked about Stephen Ward and Neill Collins before regarding how they’ll play out of position, and Andy is the same.

“And they’re doing their bit in a team that’s top of the league.

“He didn’t have his best game but people who come and boo him don’t help.

“He’s playing wide left and I suppose some smart arses will ask why play him wide left but who should I play there then?

“I wish people would shut their gobs and leave him along and let him try and play his football because booing him is not going to help. What sort of impact do you think it has on him?

“It’s not going to help Andy because he wants to perform – he loves being here.

“But if someone’s having a bad game why not encourage them?

“We can all see if a player’s having a bad time, so encourage them, try to make them feel good and feel wanted.”
