Team appeals for old pictures
Friday 17th October 2008, 8:29AM BST.
A Shropshire rugby club is gearing up celebrate its 75th birthday – but it needs the help of ex-players to find photos from its past.
Ludlow Rugby Football Club was officially founded in 1934 and the committee has made a huge display of the club’s history with photos and information from its outset. President Gerald Acton said the display is lacking team pictures from the 1960s onwards, from all teams including the firsts, seconds, thirds and colts.
Next year the club has a calendar of celebratory events organised including a visit from Sir Clive Woodward, who managed the England Rugby team to World Cup success five years ago. He was also on the panel of directors for this year’s Olympics in Beijing.
Mr Acton said there had been some confusion over exactly how old the club was. He said: “We celebrated our 50th anniversary in 1983 so it should have been our 75th anniversary this year. But we recently discovered a newspaper article which said the club was actually officially founded in 1934.
“We know rugby has been played in the town since 1933 and the grammar school was certainly playing it. But because of the revelation, we are planning the majority of our 75th celebrations next year.”
If anyone has any photographs or information they want to add to the display, they are asked to call Mr Acton on 07850 752595.
