Victims of the Vale game plan

In an action packed game against local rivals Port Vale, Town were unfortunate to be on the receiving end of some bad decisions, writes our Shrews blogger James Pugh.
It is fair to say we probably didn’t deserve to beat strugglers Port Vale – a game we would have been expecting to win before kick off – but to lose in the way we did leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
The two biggest talking points in the game were Jackson’s disallowed goal, which from where I was seemed perfectly legal. The other was Vale’s winner where their player seemed to go in on Daniels unfairly, which left him hospitalised. If it was anywhere else on the pitch then I am sure it would have been a foul.
To be fair to Vale they came with a game plan and whether people agree with it or not, it worked for them and we have got to expect that this season.
We were never going to go through the season without conceding a goal at home and unlikely to remain undefeated, but the way in which we lost on Saturday was tough to take, especially as other results meant we could have gone second in the table.
We have got to move on from this and it will be a good test for the players to show what they are made off in terms of putting disappointments behind them.
Meanwhile, Town got a kind draw in the next round of the Johnstone Paints Trophy. Following trips to Exeter and Wycombe, it was nice to get a home tie and we should be favourites to beat Dagenham. A trip to Wembley feels that bit closer!
Our victory against Wycombe was almost unbelievable and it is good to see Simpson is taking the competition seriously. Wycombe can argue they had players missing, but it wasn’t that many and to win 7-0 away from home in any competition is pretty special. Town certainly had answered my criticism of them before the match.
I had said we were not positive enough away from home and needed to show more flair – we certainly did! I also said I was concerned with Holt not getting many goals this season from open play, despite playing well – he got five! The players must have read my last blog!
Holt was a big miss on Saturday, especially following his exploits in mid week, so let’s hope he can take that form into the league on Saturday against Bournemouth.

we were big favourites on saturday, over confident, done by the better team , our disallowed goal was the right decision i was right in line everyone around me agreed , their second goal, we are clutching at straws trying to make excuses for getting beat. just take it we lost. will we be looking for excuses every time we get beat.

i think we were muscled out of it, they stuck to their game plan well, we didnt create enough clear cut chances, our front line werent firing on all cylinders and hibbert was rubbish. it was on the cards 6 successive defeats had to end sometime. they impressed me

Town were not at their best but still did enough to at least draw and ultimately the better team lost to a ref that bottled it.
Normally any challenge on the keeper results in a free kick, never mind one where the forward puts his knee through the keepers face.
Of course the ref’s reticence had nothing to do with the on-rushing hordes of Port Vale thugs from behind the goal.
I am greatly cheered by the thought that come the end of the season one of the two teams will no longer be in League Two, just a clue – I don’t think it will be Vale!
