Gunnell set for TV battle
Tuesday 14th October 2008, 12:00AM BST.
Shropshire’s Adrian Gunnell comes under glare of the television cameras tonight – bidding to match his best ever performance in a snooker ranking event.
Gunnell takes on world No 3 Shaun Murphy in the first round of the Grand Prix event at Glasgow, a match which will be shown live on BBC2 from 7pm.
Recognised as one of the most consistent players on tour, Murphy won the World Championship in 2005 and has beaten Gunnell in the pair’s only two previous meetings – both of which came in qualifying for major tournaments.
But Murphy has failed to win a game in each of the two ranking events so far this season, the Shanghai Masters and the Northern Ireland Trophy, while Gunnell – who has already won two matches to reach this stage – has been encouraged by his form in practice over the last few days.
“I have been struggling with my game for a couple of months but at the end of last week and over the weekend, I was much happier with the way I have been hitting the ball,” said the 36-year-old from Telford.
“It’s nice to qualify for a venue and I’m due a good run in a tournament shown on the BBC.
“But the two players you want to avoid in the draw are Shaun Murphy and Ronnie (O’Sullivan) so it couldn’t have been much tougher.”

Well done Adrian for beating Murphy, you did really well. Good luck for tonight against Steve Davis.

Well done Adrian, I would like to say though that you started very well but as time went by I felt that you began to over think each shot ,. good luck you must know that your first impression of a shot when you assess the table is invariably the best
