Rolling stock is tested on rail line
Saturday 11th October 2008, 11:50AM BST.
New trains will be running on Shropshire’s direct service to London by the end of November after a £5.5 million investment.
Bosses at Wrexham & Shropshire, which runs the service to London Marylebone, today said some of the vehicles were already undergoing testing.
Each train will have WiFi internet access and plugs for charging laptops or mobile phones will be available next to every seat.
Earlier this week, the firm announced the journey to the capital will be cut by up to 25 minutes under a new timetable, which will also allow business people to arrive before 9am.
Andy Hamilton, managing director, said: “Subject to successful testing, the company expects the first trains to be ready for passenger use by the end of the November, with a full fleet operational by the new year.
“The company is seeking to set a new standard for rail travel that provides a viable alternative to the car for both business and leisure travellers.
“Modern, comfortable trains with excellent facilities are central to that aim.”
Each train will have three coaches – two standard class vehicles with 144 seats and one first class with 30 seats, including the catering facilities.
Mr Hamilton said £500,000 has been invested in the refurbishment of the company’s fleet to ensure the carriages meet best practice in terms of disabled access and facilities.
