Daggers drawn as Town trophy test

Saturday 11th October 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Shrewsbury Town were today handed the first home tie of their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy campaign – against one of their early season League Two promotion rivals.

Town will entertain Dagenham & Redbridge in the southern area quarter-final in the week commencing November 3.

Dagenham’s 2-0 victory over Barnet last night took them into second place in League Two ahead of this afternoon’s round of fixtures.

But Shrewsbury supporters will still believe the draw offers them an excellent opportunity to move a step closer to a Wembley final, which is now just three stages and four matches away.

Meanwhile Town have won the League Managers Association performance of the week award for the second time this season.

Tuesday’s sensational 7-0 victory over Wycombe in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Adams Park earned Town the award.

They won the same award earlier in the season following their 7-0 Prostar Stadium drubbing of Gillingham in League Two.

The five-man panel picking the the F&C Investments Performance of the Week Award were chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry.

Striker Grant Holt produced a magnificent display on the night, scoring five of the goals.

Boss Paul Simpson said: “We couldn’t have really asked for anymore for the lads, it was a tremendous performance from every single one of them.

“That’s the best I’ve ever seen in terms of a complete performance. We’re on a good run at the moment and long may it continue.”

“In all honesty Grant Holt has been superb since the day he arrived. It’s not just about his goals but it’s the way he works – he’s a player of true quality which is just what we need.”
