MP in call for county ship

Friday 10th October 2008, 11:30AM BST.

Telford MP David Wright has called in the House of Commons for another Royal Navy vessel to be named HMS Shropshire.

The original HMS Shropshire, a London class heavy cruiser launched in 1928, served as the Allied flagship at the surrender of Japan in Tokyo Bay in September 1945 and was broken up in 1955.

Mr Wright told MPs: “It’s time for another ship to be named HMS Shropshire or HMS Telford & Wrekin.”

He has been campaigning for several years for a warship to be linked to the county.

One of the crests of HMS Shropshire is now displayed in the offices of Great Dawley Parish Council.

HMS Telford & Wrekin – is he having a laugh or what?

As a current serving member of the RN, I would hate to serve on a ship with an ‘&’ or even ‘and’ in the name for a start.

As for another ‘Shropshire’, there is little prospect at this time, as current ships are ‘D’ class, such as ‘Daring’, ‘Dragon’ etc, not named after County’s. The last county class ships were the Type 22′s, such as ‘Cumberland’ and ‘Cornwall. With current build programmes and naming conventions the way they are, it could be many many years before we see a ‘Shropshire’.

Looks like HMS Shropshire’s out of the question then. He could look at his own government’s record – “Desperate”, “Despicable”, “Duplicitous” – all suitable names for Class of ’97 economic destroyers…..

Maybe we could have an HMS Battlefield, or perhaps HMS Trench ?

Do we really want a weapon of deatha and destruction named after our peaceful county?
And we are a land-locked county as well. Our only link to the sea is Captain Webb swimming the Channel!

I could rename my boat, “Star of Shropshire”

I’ve seen a boat owned by a dentist called “Drill and Fill”

my favourites are “Prairie Oyster” (not named after the cocktail but a rather dubious delicacy from the USA) and “On Business” as in, “sorry you can’t speak to Mr. Smith right now he is away On Business”

i believe the last hms shropshire did not last long in british ownership, as it was sold to the australian navy and spent most of the war in their command. later it was stationed in the us fleet, before beibg scrapped. no matter what type of warships being built for the navy it is high time we had another hms shropshire

hopefully it wont be a weapon of death and destruction but a vessel to save lives, rescue victims of earthquakes etc and blow drug dealers out of the water, this i suggest is a modern royal navy at work

its bad luck to re-name a boat/ship. besides as our elected voice in parliment is there any chance you could ask for something that might actually benefit the people who live in shropshire

    How about

    HMS Destruction
    HMS Death Star

those are proud and fierce names for a UK Navy Ship.

Imagine the reporting. HMS Destruction and HMS Death Star are way to put down rebel forces.

HMS Telford and Wrekin ?? Do me a favour that hardly rolls off the tongue does it… Illustrious, invicible, excaliber, titantic, etc, and Telford and Wrekin, lol, hardly a decent ship name, it would be preferable to remember a noble person from history, like mandela or some such for the name, or name it after a sea faring town atleast

spencer what an excellent idea how about a tug or dredger owned by british waterways and called shropshire for the newly opened shrewsbury canal in 2096

How about HMS Maggie Thatcher? Give it an all female crew trained in close quarter hand-bag to hand-bag fighting. That would put the wind up Johnny Foreigner when they see that sailing over the horizon!

Or how about calling one the Shropshire International Nautical Kinematic?
On second thoughts the initials might not be so appropriate. hmmmmm
