Youth held over fires

Wednesday 8th October 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Firefighters were called to a home in a Shropshire village after fires broke out in the bedroom and in a nearby car.

A youth was being questioned by police following the incident at the six-bedroom house in Brockton, Worthen – used as a young people’s residential home – just after 9pm yesterday.

Three fire engines were called to deal with the blaze. The owners today pledged to investigate.

People living nearby said they were alarmed by the incident, which they claimed was the latest in a recent spate.

Keith Harrington, of New Reflexion Care Homes, said the company was mindful of the concerns of the community and would be arranging to address them.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s so frightening, this is going on every weekend.”

Another added: “It was terrifying. We heard a few bangs and then my neighbour called me but she was that shaken up I couldn’t understand her, but knew there was something seriously wrong.

“My daughter looked out of the window and the saw the flames and smoke from the car behind the house.”

Another elderly resident said: “We’ve never had this in this village before and most of us have been here for 30 or 40 years.”

The home is run by New Reflexion as a residential home for a maximum of two young people at a time.

Mr Harrington said the company was carrying out an investigation to find out exactly what had happened.

“Our home has been in operation since May and has been incident free until very recently. However, we are mindful of the concerns of the local community and will be arranging to address any concerns raised.”

Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “A youth has been arrested by police in connection with the incident.

“Fire and police continue to investigate and the police are appealing for anyone with information which might assist their investigations to call Shrewsbury police on 08457 444888.”
