Confusion over bin switch
Wednesday 8th October 2008, 12:24AM BST.
There was “pandemonium” on the streets of a Shropshire village amid confusion over the weekly rubbish collection.
Bins of every colour were left outside households in Alveley, near Bridgnorth, after a change in the collection routine left many residents wondering which ones to put out.
Veolia Environmental Services changed its collection from a black residual waste to a green recycling collection.
Alveley councillor Colin Taylor said the short notice had not registered with many residents forcing waste bosses to arrange an emergency collection.
But some bins were still not collected yesterday meaning they will now be left until the next collection.
He Taylor said: “We were due a black ie residual waste collection this week. However last Thursday residents received notification that this would be changed to a green, recyclable, collection. The result pandemonium. The short notice of the change hadn’t registered with many, especially elderly residents.
“l’ll be speaking to residents across my ward in the next few days to ascertain just how serious this problem was and also speaking directly to Veolia.
“One thing they have got to realise is that this kind of short notice will not do.”
Gareth Proffitt, Shropshire Waste Partnership spokesman, today said: “A new waste collection service was introduced in the Bridgnorth area on Monday.
“As a result, some people will find that their waste and recycling is now collected on a different day. Collection calendars have been issued to all households advising them of their new collection days.
“We are working with our contractors Veolia to minimise any disruption and confusion caused by this change in collections for some residents.
“During this transition period, if any residents find they have to wait more than two days extra for their refuse to be collected, they can leave any additional waste alongside their bin on their next scheduled collection day and it will be collected,” he added.

Just stand back for a moment and think about this article. What on earth are we doing getting into such a state over rubbish? It’s rubbish. Presumably those who put out the ‘wrong’ bag on the ‘wrong’ day will be executed. When will people wake up and stop doing as they are told? We pay the council to take our rubbish. If they want us to sort it, let them pay us. We are in charge and yet, whether it’s the councils or the Government, we cringe and do as we are told, however bizarre the command, as though we were children in school or serfs on some lord’s estate. WE are in charge; they work for US. So let’s get off our knees and reject this lunacy.

How difficult is it to put out one bin or another?
Gracious, there are more important things in the world.

“Panic on the streets of Alveley” – The Smiths.
Come on, “pandemonium”? Really? Meanwhile, back in the real world: “mild confusion”.

The real worry is the lack of reading ability amongst Bridgnorth Residents! Shocking. Accept the change and get on with it!
an over reaction by the press methinks – the changes are being made to boost recycling, so this is a good thing which we should all support, lets not over reaction, Its just a bin after all!

It’s not simply a question of ‘one bin or another’. People are now having to deal with about 5 different bins. Nor is about how ‘difficult’ it is. It’s about ‘why should I?’ And of course there are more important things in the world; if only this attitude was reflected in the harsh ways those who infringe the ‘rules’ are treated. If people want to use 20 different colour-coded, barcoded bins, then let them (though getting a life might be a better idea), but leave those who do not wish to do so alone. And to those who say unless we all do something, it will make no difference, that, I’m afraid, is one of the inconveniences of freedom. All sorts of things are possible if you compel people on pain of punishment. We live in the world and are bound to make a bit of a mess of it. Another unattractive part of this is the self-righteousness of those who take up the latest ‘green’ fads. We condemn past ages for ostracizing those who fell foul of their rules (i.e. unmarried mothers), and yet we are just as ready to gang up on those who do not share our views on the environment or other issues. Plus ca change… Don’t just obey; ask why?

Typical of this labour government to cut our services and still put taxes up, you remember david cameron has promised to reinstate weekly refuse collections across the whole of shropshire when he gets in, so you can be sure we will put an end to this recycling nonesense and go back to the good old days of weekly black sacks collections for the tip, now that will save us lots of money, so council ta can actually go down for a change, unlike under labour who have seen tax rates go up and up whilst waste services have done nothing but get cut, anyone who doesnt like it is obviously a communist, a greenie or a loon

give them a break they do a good job those bin men
Report abuse
so diddy david cameron wants a return to weekly collections, what a waste of money. down here in devon we are happy with fortnightly collections. one week wheely bins and the blue bin(tory) for kitchen scraps, the other week the green box recycling of paper, plastics, glass, tins and batteries. simple really as it saves council tax.

I absolutely agree with Stephen.
We PAY to have our rubbish collected. That means – collect it ALL ….. and ALL at the same time
It is NOT – repeat NOT – our damned responsibilty to sort ANYTHING. And it’s about time this was made CLEAR. We are not a subservient race to be pushed around at will just because someone thinks its a good idea.
IF those in authority think that recycling is a good idea then fine –
What’s the big problem in collecting it Wholesale from us weekly – and THEN sorting it out ? – that’s what WE pay taxes for!
If I’m going to have to sort my rubbish out into increasingly more diverse categories, then I might as well do the whole damned job myself – that is sorting it AND including taking it to the tip and cut out the middle man!!

Typical public sector, Shropshire CC couldnt organise a drinking competion in a brewery
Atleast when big Dave gets in we will sort out the bins, get back to basis and drop all this recycling nonesense
Report abuse
the service bdc used to provide was top class, ever since they gave the service away to the county council to run, its been rubbish, this shows what will happen when the new unitary coucil comes into being, shropshire cc is just to large and distant a body to run local services for local people, you need a small lean organisation like a district council to do the job proper!!
Not sure how the tory policy of putting on extra rubbish collections will fit in with their policy of lower taxes???????? Not only will there be an increase in council tax then if you vote tory, but also less recycling which will result in higher disposal costs and massive fines from europe, so further tax increases is official Tory policy!
silly residents it seems they are the ones at fault, everyone else manages ok

Con on is this really a issue? The majority of rubbish can be burnt in your back gardens and with bonfire night coming up you could create a big bonfire and combine it with a firework show in your garden until 11pm!!!
problem solved

one wonders if toryboy knows the difference between a recycling box, lloyds bank and a sperm bank. sorry i am right he doesn’t!
Hey, Tory Boy! Get back to ‘basis’ and learn to spell.

An excellent point Peter, it shows the mockery of Tory Policy – pro green and yet anti recycling, pro carbon saving yet pro a new airport for london, pro reducing taxes and yet all for spending more money on all manner of things,
This is why Gordon Brown exposed a huge hole in their mis thought out plans when he says “this is no time for an apprentice” – George Osbourne, next chancellor of the exchequer? Do be a favour the boy can hardly count, he hasnt a clue, as Sir Alan would say, Oi Apprentice, you’re a light weight, YOU’RE FIRED!
i am convinced toryboy is a bit of a wind up merchant, like h peasebody he is making me laugh. perhaps he is a left wing socialist in disguise, i think we should be told
Report abuse
the beurocats at shirehall who dream up these hair brained schemes should be fired, this is a great theory which just doesnt work in reality, I have so many containers i dont know what to do with them! In Nottinghamshire they collect all the stuff mixed up and sort it for you, its such a better system, easier, cheaper, safer, more recycling, why cant we have that in Bridgenorth too?
The tory’s aren’t really green because if they were they would back recycling and new waste collection arrangements like the above, even if it does make them unpopular, they are just pandering to middle class votes, and going for cheap headlines in the Daily Mail, stay firm and resolute I urge the powers that be, you will never get Dutch levels of recycling without putting a few noses out of joint, just be tough with them and hold your ground, you know you are doing the right thing. Personally I would be content with monthly bin collections because I feed all my food waste to my chickens and my wormery and recycle as much as poss

dan: You lazy lot, sort it urself! Why should tax payers pay more just because you cant tell the difference between a glass bottle and plastic one?
is it any surprise that now a private company is running rubbish collections (FOR A PROFIT!) that we get less service? Also they cream off all the money from recycling while metal prices are sky high – this should be getting invested into social services or keeping my council tax down, i think its a disgrace that they could privatise bins and degrade the service to such a level as we have to put up with in shropshire, bring back weekly rubbish, give us mixed recycling all in one bin, and cut our council taxes
Report abuse
there will be chaos in bridgnorth now they have gone down this route, you mark my words, they will regret they ever did this, rubbish needs to be collected weekly for hygeine reasons, its not acceptable to say its too expensive any more we pay more than enough taxes and they should cut back on all the waste in the council before they cut back on our waste
Report abuse
Get over it guys its only a bin… I dont see the bother especially if they are doing an extra one off collection to cover the gap, 3 weeks is nothing for me, i havent put my bin out for a month and its still only half full, i just recycle everything, i wish more people would sort their own problems out instead of blaming the government all the time, come on people stand on your own two feet and deal with life,

well we are still waiting for our wheelie bins in some parts of bridgnorth .anyone in arvley could a spare one any colour will do.. ha ha

Just spoke to my friend who lives in Broseley and he was the only one on his street to put out the right bin this week (Weds instead of Tues). Can’t anyone else read.
I still can’t believe that it is that difficult to put a different bin out.

Since when did anyone care about how much rubbish some one produces? Since when did it become a crime against humanity to throw something away, the bin police have gone mad, they have too much power, we need to reign them in…
When big Dave gets in he will sort out all this nonesense about the environment, get back to free market policies and human rights, that includes my right to create waste and have it taken away free of charge by the people who’s wages I pay!

I live in an area with a random bin collection service.
Leave all the bins out on said day and hopefully one random bin will be collected on one random day when someone can be bothered to turn up.
A joke?… unfortunately not, it’s real, the excuse… “we are aware there are problems”.

Bin day is something that very rarely changes, so you cannot blame people for being confused, i think the Council should have made more effort with communicating the change, perhaps writing to each household at least

Karen K: Your random bin collection sounds like fun. You could have a little bet on the side with your neighbours when they will be collected – much cheaper than going to Ascot and bins dont get shot if a wheel falls off!
