Not the time to give royals more cash

Tuesday 7th October 2008, 12:49AM BST.

LETTER – It wasn’t so very long ago that anyone daring to say that the outrageous bonuses “fat cats” in the City were awarding themselves were, well, outrageous, would be accused of indulging in envy.

Well, now look who are numbered among the “envious”.

The Archbishop of Canterbury – “maybe Karl Marx had a point”.

The Archbishop of York – “these people are nothing but bank robbers”.

David Cameron and his Shadow Chancellor – applauded at the Tory conference for throwing verbal brick bats at the Square Mile dwellers in bowler hats and red braces.

The Republican Party in America.

And before all of these, Jesus Christ, shortly before he was put to death – bad move to criticise the money lenders.

And while this modern version of Rome burning is putting the likelihood of millions at risk, who is fiddling? Why, tis the Windsor family.

Yes one family – just one family – wants the government to increase the Civil List handouts by £7.9 million. The Government is resisting.

Royal aides are reminding ministers and Parliament that they have a constitutional duty to ensure that the monarchy is financially secure.

It should be so lucky. I’ve just had a letter from British Gas explaining why I am not protected. If it’s wrong to provide greedy and very culpable “fat cats” of the City with golden parachutes, is this really the time to bail out the most over indulged, pampered family in the land?
