More than 100 daredevils took on a charity challenge and flew across the River Severn on a zip line from Shrewsbury’s new theatre.

The Quantum Leap Challenge saw fundraisers flying on a zip line or abseiling down the side of the multi-million pound building to raise funds for the Severn Hospice.

The twin event, organised by Severn Hospice fundraising officer Val Walters, took place yesterday and saw nearly 150 people taking in the challenges.

She said: “It went fantastically well, I was really, really pleased with the day and I think everybody else was too.

“I did both events and can confirm they were both very good.”Everyone who was registered to take part took part and they have all done really well with raising money for the hospice.

“And we were so lucky because the flood defences went up last night and the entrance was actually through where the flood defence barrier is.

“We are now just waiting for all of the money to come in to see how much we have raised.”

The zip line ran from the new Theatre Severn, which is set to open in February, across the river to land in Mardol Quay Gardens, which will soon be re-developed into the Darwin Memorial Eco-garden.

The abseil took place from the same viewing terrace, over the edge and down the wall to the ground.

Organisers have thanked building developer, Willmott Dixon, for allowing them to use the building to raise funds for Severn Hospice.
