Area braced for more wet weather

People in Shropshire were bracing themselves today as the River Severn continued to rise across the county and more rain was forecast.

Roads closed and fields disappeared underwater as the river level rose following the wet weather.

The Severn at Shrewsbury and from Buildwas to Coalport, including Ironbridge, remained on flood warning this morning as environment officials monitored the rising water.

The entire stretch of the River Severn is on flood watch, along with the Severn Vyrnwy Confluence and the Upper Severn in Powys. The River Worfe near Albrighton was given the all clear this morning.

River levels continued to rise after reaching 2.86m this morning in Bridgnorth. It is expected to peak tomorrow lunchtime.John Warner, Shropshire Star weatherman, said more rain was in store today, but the rest of the week was looking much brighter.

Surface water and flooding also closed Buildwas Road in the Severn Gorge and the A4169 was closed both ways between Much Wenlock Road and The Wharfage.
