Work on lake set to start

Monday 6th October 2008, 6:59PM BST.

Work to restore a Mid Wales lake is to start next week, it was announced today.

Engineers will be working on Llandrindod Wales Lake from Monday in a bid to prevent a repeat of an algae build-up in 2006 which saw thousands of fish die.

Specialist dredging firm Blue Boar Contracts, from Warwickshire, will be working with Powys County Council and consultants Capita Symonds, which has an office in Station Crescent, Llandrindod Wells, will carry out the works.

Councillor Gwyn Gwillim, board member responsible for outdoor recreation, said: “I’m delighted these works will start shortly. They are one of the elements which will help restore the ecological balance of the lake.

“This will prevent a reoccurrence of the events in 2006. Planting and managing suitable vegetation and fish management are also part of our long term plans to restore the ecological balance of the lake.”

Councillor Sarah Millington, member for Llandrindod South, said she was pleased to see the project progressing.
