More than 500 people turned out to the Green Day organised by Madeley Parish Council at the Madeley Park, off Legges Way, yesterday.

The Green Day, which this year had a theme highlighting the dangers of global warming, including a tour of Madeley community gardens, the chance to make your own apple juice or try your hand at willow maze building.

Visitors also got the chance to watch a falconry demonstration and heavy horses in action.

Parish Council Clerk Kath Petty said the event – now in its fifth year – was a resounding success, despite downpours as the organisers set up.

“It was a great success. There were not quite as many people as last year but it was still a really good afternoon.

Campaigner Rachel Whittaker, who had been banned from handing over leaflets on climate change on the day, attended with three colleagues and said they had received a positive response.

He said: “We didn’t go as protesters, just as members of the public,’ she explained, before adding that there had been interest in the campaign. We don’t thrust or force our leaflets on anyone and as we went around people were asking for our leaflet.”
