Prison (Photo: Rebecca Naden / PA)A 23-year-old Telford woman has been jailed for 12 months after smacking and biting her two young children then leaving them alone in the house while she got drunk with friends.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday charged with four counts of child cruelty to her five-year-old daughter and six-year-old son.

The charges included abandoning the children for more than two hours, smacking her son three times, and smacking, butting and biting her daughter.

Mr Daniel White, prosecuting, said the police were called to the woman’s home in the Dawley area of Telford after her son went to a neighbour’s house.

“He told the neighbour he had been smacked and left alone,” Mr White said.

“He said his mother had got drunk and had gone out leaving him and his sister alone. The neighbour found the daughter in a urine-soaked bed, wearing nothing but her pants and very upset. She had a bite mark on her cheek and red marks on her legs.”

The woman had admitted the charges at a previous hearing on June 30 and her children have been in voluntary foster care since the incident.
