Recycling plea over disposal of plastic

Friday 3rd October 2008, 11:49AM BST.

LETTER - I would like to raise an issue regarding roadside recycling. As a family of five we produce quite a lot of rubbish, so we started to recycle more.

Having already recycled paper and newspapers for a few years, we started to put in tins, bottle and plastic milk containers.

The tins and bottles were taken away for recycling, but the plastic milk containers were left behind. We rang environmental maintenance, and they said: “We don’t take them, they take too much room up on the lorry.”

They said we could always take them to a recycling centre.

In reply to that I said I didn’t want to enlarge my carbon footprint, as the Government and councils keep telling us that we have to be more environmentally friendly.

Their reply was that we could always carry them to the recycling centre on foot. But our recycling centre is a mile away so this would not be an option.

I feel this is a major issue in the light of talks on an incinerator being built at Granville. When this is up and running it will be burning these plastic milk containers and other toxins and may possibly cause pollution to local areas.

We would hope the council will plan for future plastic collections. Our neighbouring South Staffordshire council, among others, does collect plastics.

So, come on, Telford & Wrekin, practise what you preach. Recycle our plastic.
