Bomb bid accused face trial
Thursday 2nd October 2008, 11:50AM BST.
The trial of a former Shropshire doctor accused of plotting to explode car bombs in London and Glasgow was due to start this afternoon.
Mohammed Asha, 28, who worked at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a junior doctor until August 2006, was due to appear at Woolwich Crown Court for the start of his trial.
Asha, who denied charges of plotting to explode car bombs in London and Glasgow when he appeared at the Old Bailey via video link in June, is also believed to have worked at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital.
He and Bilal Abdullah are accused of conspiracy to murder and to cause explosions between January 1, 2006, and July 1, 2007.
Asha, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, was arrested on the M6 motorway in Cheshire on June 30 last year. The previous day, police found two cars laden with gas canisters and fuel parked in central London.
His arrest came hours after Abdullah, of the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley, was arrested after a burning Jeep was driven into Glasgow Airport on June 30 last year.
