Thursday 2nd October 2008, 11:50AM BST.
Police and firefighters recovered the body of an elderly man from the River Severn in the Ironbridge Gorge after a member of the public raised the alarm. The man, believed to be from the Black Country, is understood to have been house-sitting for his daughter and son-in-law in Coalport while they were on holiday in Spain.
The body was discovered floating in the river in Coalport by a dog walker at 6.30pm yesterday. A search was carried out and the body was found 30 minutes later, near to Coalport Bridge.
Roger Hotchkiss, landlord of the Brewery Inn in Coalport, said he was called by police at 11pm when he identified the body as that of one of his customers.
The man, in his early 80s, has not yet been named.
The body was found along the stretch of the river which runs alongside the private drive leading to his daughter’s home. A police guard remained there this afternoon.
Police are treating it as an unexplained death and say there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.
