Anger at decision to allow building
Thursday 2nd October 2008, 11:50AM BST.
A councillor has branded a Powys County Council decision to back a new homeless shelter in Llandrindod Wells as “ridiculous”.
The council’s planning committee has approved plans for the shelter at Gwynfa, Lant Avenue.
But Councillor Sarah Millington, member for Llandrindod Wells South, claimed this ignored residents’ views.
She said: “The decision to go ahead with the plans for the shelter are plain ridiculous. They should have listened to the community because we don’t want it in our town.
“We are all very upset – the decision even goes against what the three county councillors for the town wanted.
“We are all upset and worried.”
Mid Wales Housing Association is turning the former office into short-stay accommodation for homeless people.
Association bosses said the shelter would have six beds and would be staffed 24 hours a day.
It would also have round-the-clock CCTV camera coverage and an 11pm visitor curfew.
Councillor Gary Price, for Llandrindod East/West, added: “I’m sick of Llandrindod Wells being used as a dumping ground for the homeless.
“It’s time we said enough is enough.”
Fears were raised by the public that the centre would affect elderly neighbours.
They were unhappy about it being between two primary schools.
