Wolves lick their wounds

Wednesday 1st October 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Wayne Hennessey trudges off disconsolate after the final whistle.Mick McCarthy was left to reflect on a costly Molineux night after an emphatic 3-0 defeat against third-placed Reading was compounded by injuries to Wolves wingers Michael Kightly and Matt Jarvis.

Wolves would have opened up an 11-point gap over their visitors had they recorded an eighth successive Coca-Cola Championship victory, and so consolidated their best start to a season for 59 years.

But Reading were excellent value for their first away win since relegation from the Premier League and could have had even more goals to show for their labours.

“We had almost forgotten that bitter taste of defeat but the cost is huge with the injuries,” McCarthy admitted.
