County cemetery nets award

An historic Shropshire cemetery has been named as a winner in the national Cemetery of the Year awards.

Bridgnorth Cemetery, in Mill Street, was named as the winner of the small town cemeteries of between five and 15 acres category at last night’s annual Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) conference and exhibition in Kenilworth, Warwickshire.

It caps off a fantastic few weeks for the town after it was named as a winner in the Heart of England in Bloom awards and received a silver gilt in the Britain in Bloom awards.

The town was represented at the ceremony by its mayor, Councillor Brian Jones, who was presented with a slab of Welsh slate engraved with gold lettering recording the town’s achievement.

He said: “It’s the first time the town has entered the competition and I was flabbergasted when our name was read out.”
