Kightly cool on promotion

Michael KightlyMichael Kightly says Wolves are targeting two points a game – but insists boss Mick McCarthy would ‘rip their heads off’ if players started talking about winning the title.

Saturday’s 2-0 win against Bristol City was their seventh in a row and clinched Wolves’ best start since 1949 as they retained their three-point lead at the top.

“The gaffer says we want to get two points a game, so if we get that it would be 92 points – and you could win the league with that,” said Kightly.

“We’re a bit ahead of schedule at the moment, but that’s our aim.”

Tomorrow’s opponents Reading stormed to the Championship title in 2005-06 but Kightly dismissed any suggestion of Wolves doing the same.

“We haven’t even thought about the title or anything like that,” he said.

“It’s far too early to say we’re going to run away with the league. If the gaffer heard anyone say that, he’d rip their head off.

“Being three points clear means nothing. You can lose three games and you’re sixth or seventh.”

But Kightly admits Wolves are the major scalp in the Championship.

“We’re the only unbeaten team in the Championship and everyone is trying to knock us off that pedestal,” he said.

“We know that and we’re trying to maintain this run. If we lose, then it’s all about how we react to it, and if we do lose – we kick on again.

“There’s definitely no complacency. Maybe against Crystal Palace we scored too early and took our foot off the gas. But that’s the only game that’s happened. We’ve been in people’s faces, and, when we score, we try to score more.”

Kightly insists Wolves’ success is down to team spirit. “We’re very close – there are no big-time Charlies and that’s the whole, 28 man-squad,” he said.

“We all want to win together whether you’re playing, on the bench or in the stand.”
