Police war on knives and drugs

Saturday 27th September 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Police in Shropshire today warned people carrying weapons and illegal drugs: “We are out to ruin your day.”The message came after revellers at Pussycats in Wellington were tested for illegal drugs and searched in a huge crackdown on drug dealing and knife crime last night.

Clubbers going into the Tan Bank complex were swobbed by police at the end of a week-long operation to “clean sweep” the streets of anti-social behaviour. They were also searched for weapons using a hand-held metal detector inside a glove.

Inspector Dick Langton said it was time drug users and knife carriers realised there was no place for them in the town.

The revolutionary Iontrak machine was used to swob the hands of nearly 300 clubbers in just over two hours.

Eight people tested positive for illegal drugs and were quizzed by a team of police officers outside. A 25-year-old man tested positive for cocaine and left the club. He was then searched by officers who discovered a bag of white powder on him.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a class-A drug and was taken to Malinsgate Police Station.

Six people – one woman and five men – were found with traces of class-B drug cannabis. While two men gave positive tests for class-A drug cocaine.

Bosses of Pussycats welcomed officers into the club to do the operation.

Inspector Dick Langton, of Wellington Police Station, said: “If people are carrying drugs or weapons we are out to spoil their day before they spoil it for everyone else.”

The majority of clubbers welcomed the crackdown.

One man, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s brilliant. My sister came into a nightclub and someone gave her drugs and we never saw her alive again. It was three months ago and she was only 23 – one ecstasy tablet killed her – that’s all it took.”

Mr Langton said: “What is very pleasing is the positive reaction from the vast majority of people and the willingness of the men and women of Wellington to take part.”

I just read this in the paper version and I am convinced it proves that the police are using heavy handed tactics to disrupt peoples enjoyment on a Friday night.
Almost 300 people checked and one arrest and no knives.
It proves that the police action was unjustified and an attack on peoples freedom to move about as they please.
What next, breath tests for those on foot or perhaps a clampdown on people eating too many burgers?
Meanwhile the real villains run amok.

So does saying “we are out to ruin you day” really have an inpact on crime or have they been watching too much Dirty Harry?

Police propaganda via the Shropshire Star, Nearly 300 people delayed and one arrest and no knives.
Over 99% were totally innocent and The Star reports this as a success?
The police have proven drugs are not an issue and should focus their attention elsewhere.

Good on the police – I would encorage more funding to able the police to carry out these searches each week.

We need a tougher law system in this country.

What a waste of tax payers money, funding something which wont do anything to help the police/public relations amongst younger people!!

I beleive the law system in this country is pretty weak at the moment and i agree that it needs toughening up, this is something the goverment could spend our money on effectively rather than a new kitchen.

Some of these comments are laughable ! The Police are being heavy handed ? what, by doing a perfectly logical thing? drugs and knives can destroy peoples lives, and if people can’t spare a few seconds for a quick search then i guess that says alot about them. You’d be searched at gunpoint in some countries !

8 positives out of 300 swab tests is a lot below the average rate of drug use as revealed by the govt.’s British Crime Survey – pointing to a clear waste of police resources. Go catch some dealers….

Having seen first hand the aftermath of a double stabbing incident, I have no problems with this approach whatsoever.

Bob: Do you know how the Govt Crime Survey is compiled?
Its like this, police officers tick a box depending on what they think it is and what suits their own target.
For example, someone stole a Golli-wog and it went down as a racial crime as the force’s target for theft was not being achieved but racial crime was down!

you don’t want to be outside clubs doing these tests, you need to be on housing estates and street corners
