Pub in closure risk over police complaints

Thursday 25th September 2008, 11:50AM BST.

An Oswestry public house could be closed following allegations that bar staff served drunk customers and sold alcohol to underage youngsters.Police have also said there have been incidents of overcrowding, assault and drunken and disorderly behaviour at The Boar’s Head in Willow Street.

But the licensee said she worked hard to stay within the law.

West Mercia Police have now asked for a review of the pub’s premises licence because they consider licensing objectives including public safety, the prevention of crime and disorder, protection of children and prevention of public nuisance have been “undermined”.

Members of Oswestry Borough Council’s licensing sub-committee will discuss the matter at a meeting next week. The police have submitted a log of incidents and visits they have recorded at the premises listed since December last year to the committee.

A report to members, prepared by council officers, says police have alleged “inebriated persons” have been served alcohol at the premises and there had been an alleged assault.

Pat Thomas, The Boar’s Head licensee, said: “We note what the police have to say, but believe we have operated a successful and safe pub for the last 20 years.

“We do our utmost to comply with the law at all times and will make our representations known to committee next week.

“We are currently working with the police in a genuine effort to resolve any differences prior to the hearing on Wednesday.”

She said she hoped the matter would be resolved on the day.
