MP quits bench in presidency bid

Thursday 25th September 2008, 11:50AM BST.

Lembit OpikMP Lembit Opik has quit the Liberal Democrat front bench to focus on his bid to become president of the party.

The 43-year-old, who has dated Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia and TV weathergirl Sian Lloyd, contacted Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg yesterday to inform him of his decision to hand over his housing portfolio and concentrate on the presidential race.

Mr Opik said: “Nick understands my reasons for handing it over but as leader maintains neutrality about the presidency.

“It is now full speed ahead for the presidential campaign, a job I have wanted for eight years.

“My two priorities are my constituents of Montgomeryshire and the presidency. Therefore I want to give them my full attention and dedication.”

He continued: “My track record speaks for itself and I will continue to provide a link for the membership to the party hierarchy and ensure our messages can be communicated more effectively.

“I am looking forward to meeting as many people as possible over the next few weeks and listening to their views from the grassroots about how we can ensure the maximum number of MPs after the next General Election.”

The mid-Wales MP is up against Baroness Ros Scott and Chandila Fernando for the post, soon to be vacated by Simon Hughes, who is stepping down at the end of his term.

A ballot by the party membership will close on November 7.
