Man, 39, injured in glider accident

Thursday 25th September 2008, 11:50AM BST.

A paraglider had a “lucky” escape after falling 30ft on to a hill on the Shropshire border.

The 39-year-old man had to be airlifted to hospital following the crash at Corndon Hill, near Priest Weston, Powys, yesterday afternoon.

A West Midland Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a 39-year-old man with back and leg pains. Crews were told he was paragliding when he appeared to lose control and fell about 30 feet, landing on his legs.

“He was immobilised with the use of a spinal board and neck collar and flown to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

“The crews treating him said he was lucky his injuries were not more serious.”

The crash happened at about 3.20pm.

Sian George, Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman, said: “It would appear the paraglider had taken off from the north side of the ridge on Corndon Hill and lost control. Thankfully, it looks as though he suffered fairly minor leg injuries but was airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment.”

She said the paraglider was believed to be a beginner.

The British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association said it would be investigating the crash.

Steve Walsh, from the Mid-Wales hang gliding and parachute club, said accidents were not uncommon in the area.
